This summer the NorthWest Overland Rally (NWOR) is back again in the mountains around Leavenworth WA. Affectionately known as the Washington Alps, the region is known for stunning scenery, world-class fly-fishing, the Washington Back-Country Discovery Route (WABDR) and the Bavarian-themed town of Leavenworth.

Now in its seventh year, the NWOR has grown to be the biggest Overland event on the West Coast. Vendors and attendees come from all over the globe, and everyone has a great time. Presenting brands include all our usual favourites, like ARB, WARN, Land Rover, Jeep, Mercedes, AT, Equipt, MSR, etc., but the event also brings in a lot of fun local brands, including mountain bike rentals, gear outfitters, local vehicle modification shops, etc.

The permanent off-road technical course, built into an adjacent pine forest, is added to and expanded every year, so each year it gets better and adds a new challenge to regular attendees. The certified instructors on the course ensure fun is had by all, but nothing gets broken, whether you are trying out a new Range Rover or playing in an old Unimog. Recovery classes, driver training, shelter-building and more happen in the forested area, while the main field and tents are used for classes like first-aid, mechanical, photography, security, wine-tasting, etc. When the weather gets hot, attendees jump in the shallow river to cool off.

Although it continues to grow, the NWOR retains its charm. A deliberately family-friendly event, the field is awash with kids of all ages, friendly dogs, young couples, and relaxed retired travelers, all chatting to each other, often while chowing down on lunch from the famous taco truck that comes back every year. The price is also designed to attract a wide variety of people. At $85 a head, or $160 for a whole family, anyone can attend. The price includes all presentations, courses, nightly happy hours, and chances to win at the nightly raffle, where the prizes include winches, roof-top tents, and more.

The 2017 NWOR will be held June 15-18, as usual in Plain WA, just outside Leavenworth, 2 hours from Seattle.

This year the organizers are launching their first Canadian overland event, the BC Overland Rally will have the same format, and will be held the following weekend, June 22-25 at Hemlock Valley ski resort, 2 hours from Vancouver BC.
